Liverpool Bay CCS project unlocks UK green industrial transformation and low-carbon aviation fuel opportunity
The UK Government and Eni have reached financial close on the Liverpool Bay Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) project, marking the beginning of construction on one of the most advanced CCS initiatives globally. This milestone is a significant step in accelerating the UK’s path to net zero while revitalising its industrial base.
The project, a part of the HyNet industrial cluster, will capture CO₂ emissions from across the North West of England and North Wales and store them in depleted gas reservoirs beneath Liverpool Bay. With an initial capacity of 4.5 million tonnes of CO₂ annually and a long-term target of 10 million tonnes, the system will form the backbone of the region’s carbon management infrastructure.
Beyond its environmental benefits, this project is a catalyst for economic growth. With around 2,000 construction-phase jobs expected, the Liverpool Bay CCS system is set to play a pivotal role in revitalising the UK’s industrial base by providing long-term momentum for energy and manufacturing. Backed by a £21.7 billion government framework, it stands as a landmark clean energy initiative that reflects a decisive shift toward future-facing infrastructure.
Avioxx sees this as a critical step in their sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) development strategy. The Liverpool Bay CCS system provides the ideal infrastructure to complement Avioxx’s planned production facilities. By capturing and permanently storing the CO₂ byproduct from their proprietary waste-to-fuel process, the lifecycle emissions of their alternative jet fuel will be significantly reduced, offering a compelling path to net zero aviation.
With increasing pressure from SAF mandates including the UK SAF Mandate and ReFuel EU Aviation, the ability to deliver certified sustainable fuel solutions is becoming a competitive necessity for airlines. This development highlights a growing ecosystem of infrastructure that supports scalable, low-carbon manufacturing and, with Avioxx’s SAF project, presents a green energy and SAF investment opportunity, ushering in a new era of clean, secure, and commercially viable aviation energy.
