Avioxx secures UK Department for Transport grant to advance sustainable fuel development

Avioxx Limited, a pioneering sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) technology and manufacturing company, is proud to announce that it has been awarded a research and development grant from the UK Department for Transport (DfT).

The funding, part of the UK SAF Clearing House initiative, aims to accelerate the certification and commercialisation of innovative low-carbon fuel technologies.

Avioxx’s SAF development programme focuses on creating advanced sustainable fuels to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the aviation sector by leveraging the firm’s patented process. The funding will support the testing of prototype fuel produced at the Avioxx Advanced Fuels Laboratory established earlier this year in Runcorn, Cheshire.

Chris Hancock, CEO of Avioxx, commented:

"This grant underscores our commitment to revolutionising the aviation fuel landscape. By harnessing waste hydrocarbons through our innovative process, we aim to contribute meaningfully to the UK’s sustainability and net-zero targets. There is enough waste in the UK that is incinerated or sent to landfill to meet approximately 50% of the UK’s aviation fuel demand. This, coupled with the new UK & EU mandates which enforce the requirement for 2% of all jet fuel to be sustainable from January 1st 2025 is a massive leap forward in achieving sustainable flight."

The grant will support critical R&D activities, including pre-screening testing and ASTM qualification. It will propel Avioxx's efforts to produce high-performance, low-carbon fuels while attracting private investment into the SAF sector by demonstrating successful fuel production. By 2030, Avioxx plans to scale its production capacity to 32,000 tonnes of SAF annually.

The Department for Transport (DfT), the Energy Institute at the University of Sheffield and Ricardo are delivering the UK’s SAF Clearing House, working closely with stakeholders and organisations across the industry. The UK SAF Clearing House Grants programme, reflects the government’s commitment to fostering innovation and supporting technologies that reduce aviation emissions. The initiative aligns with the government’s Jet Zero Strategy, which seeks to establish a robust SAF industry in the UK and enables advancement of novel SAF technology routes by providing support to organisations like Avioxx to rigorously test their fuels in accordance with international standards.
