Celebrating 2 Years of Avioxx (and 100 Years of Fischer-Tropsch)

Celebrating 2 Years of Avioxx (and 100 Years of Fischer-Tropsch)

Avioxx’s major achievements

Over the last two years Avioxx has gone from a patented idea waiting to be put into action, to the creation of a talented team of chemical engineers, entrepreneurs, specialists and technical experts. They are an expanding company that is tackling the climate crisis and positively impacting society by turning household waste which is destined for landfill or incineration into ultra-clean, high performance sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) that is cost-competitive with fossil-derived jet fuel.

After securing pre-Series A backing from Trailfinders, a leading UK travel company, Avioxx is now taking steps to scale up towards the development of their first production plant, which will have a 5,000 TPA SAF capacity then a first-of-a-kind commercial plant with 32,000 TPA SAF capacity.

Over the past year, Avioxx was honoured to be invited to exhibit at its first international conference, Aerospace Tech Week, where it stood out as the sole company championing a greener future for the aviation industry through sustainable fuels. This milestone marked a significant step in expanding the Avioxx brand globally in addition to the formation of strategic commercial partnerships with leading European technology providers including SolydEra and Hulteberg Chemistry & Engineering.

In parallel, the Avioxx team has spent the last two years actively validating their novel SAF process at their Advanced Fuels facility in the North West of England. Through ongoing experimentation, they have demonstrated how solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) efficiently convert syngas—a blend of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen (H2) — into electricity via electrochemical reactions, eliminating the need for combustion.

The Avioxx Process

Avioxx’s patented process integrates Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) technology in synergy with gasification, electrolysis, and the Fischer-Tropsch (FT) process—a critical system for producing a range of chemical compounds traditionally derived from fossil fuels. This innovative process flow underscores Avioxx’s commitment to environmental sustainability, delivering circular economy solutions, and the advancement of clean energy technologies.

This week, Avioxx attended the 100 Years of Fischer-Tropsch conference in Mülheim an der Ruhr, Germany, which fittingly coincided with the company’s second anniversary. Marking its first academic conference, Avioxx’s abstract was accepted for a poster presentation. The event, hosted by German chemical engineering and biotechnology society DECHEMA, brought together leading experts, academics and organisations involved in FT research and development including the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Energy Conversion and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, and Shell, BP and Sasol.

The Avioxx Process

At the conference, Avioxx shared insights into its application of the FT process and its pivotal role in the energy transition—specifically in replacing fossil-derived hydrocarbon fuels with sustainable alternatives. The team highlighted the importance of FT technology in shaping the future of clean aviation. With extensive research underway in catalyst development, reaction mechanisms, and academic-industry collaborations toward commercialisation, the continued investment in the Fischer-Tropsch process underscores its critical importance and relevance a hundred years after it was patented. Avioxx was honoured to contribute to this legacy at the event by showcasing its innovations and advancing the role of FT technology in enabling truly sustainable flight.

The achievements of the past two years have been monumental—not only in advancing sustainable aviation but also in fulfilling the Avioxx vision to advance engineering solutions for a greener future of fuel production. We are excited for what lies ahead for us and the development of the Fischer-Tropsch process.
