Avioxx pioneers production of sustainable aviation fuel by utilising machine learning and artificial intelligence with ambitions for a Smart-Refinery.
Avioxx, a leading Sustainable Aviation Fuel production company, is at the forefront of embracing the use of software at the core of their manufacturing process to optimise production and therefore provide a competitive edge against more traditional fuel producers.
The integration of advanced technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, and sustainable practices, into traditional manufacturing processes are key principles of Avioxx. Traditional fuel manufacturing processes often lack real time optimisation and automation. The unique and patented Avioxx process has multiple opportunities to implement real time optimisation using machine learning, robotics, and artificial intelligence.
A key challenge to the process is the varying quality of the feedstock and waste used within the process. Within the 3 steps main of the process the first step of processing, measuring, and performing diagnostics of the density of hydrocarbons is the most complex. Measuring and identifying the type of waste input into the system along with the definition of the molecular type of hydrocarbon input will potentially allow the systems to be reconfigured in real time and therefore maintain efficiency within the process.
We have defined an array of process variables that will be measured during the production. The real time modelling and profiling of the data with larger data sets will allow system components to be configured, such as the temperature and pressure that some steps are operating at. The cost of energy inputs and sources of green energy also need to be adapted in real time to maintain the efficiency and financial viability.
Our work in developing sustainable aviation fuel from waste materials demonstrates our commitment to driving innovation and sustainability in the aerospace industry and development of a future focused refinery will set the business apart from the competition in addition to increasing the overall quality of the Jet A1 fuel produced.
Avioxx's Smart Refinery design for the development of Sustainable Aviation Fuel from waste
By utilising waste materials as feedstock, we are transforming a traditionally carbon-intensive aviation industry into one that promotes environmental sustainability and net zero. Sustainable aviation fuel offers a viable alternative to Jet A1 fuel produced from crude oil, reducing overall carbon output, and mitigating the environmental impact of air travel.
Other alternatives such as electric and hydrogen planes are still very nascent in their development. The size of the global fleet of commercial plans is around 25,000, these plans can use SAF fuel rather than traditional aviation fuel with ease and achieve their net zero targets.
Similar approaches by other fuel manufacturing organisations
Avioxx is not alone in embracing this modern software driven approach to manufacturing and fuel production. Numerous organisations across various sectors have recognised the potential of software driven fuel manufacturing and have begun integrating advanced technologies into their operations. Some call this approach Industry 5.0. Automotive companies are investing in autonomous vehicles, healthcare institutions are leveraging AI for diagnostics, and manufacturing plants are implementing smart factories with connected systems.
Exciting developments
Industry 5.0 brings forth a multitude of exciting developments. Intelligent automation, enabled by AI and robotics, streamlines production processes, enhancing efficiency and quality. The integration of Internet of Things (IoT) devices allows for real-time data monitoring and analysis, facilitating predictive maintenance and reducing downtime. Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies enhance training and collaboration, enabling remote work and improving safety.
